Divalproex is a medication used to treat bipolar disorder or focal seizures, and can be used to prevent migraines. Divalproex is available as a brand name or generic drug and comes in a variety of different dosage forms.

Divalproex is a medication that can be used to treat bipolar disorder or focal seizure disorders, and it can be used to prevent migraines. The brand name equivalent of Divalproex is called Depakote.

Divalproex increases the amount of a neurotransmitter chemical called Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This helps stabilize mood and gives a nerve-calming effect.

It is available as an oral capsule (immediate- or extended- release), an oral solution (immediate release), an IV injection and as an extended-release tablet.

Common side effects of Divalproex include headache, upset stomach, dizziness, fatigue, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, weight changes, hair loss and flu-like symptoms.

Stopping Divalproex suddenly without talking to your doctor can result in seizures.

If you are taking the capsules or tablets, take your dose with a full glass of water. If you have trouble swallowing pills, there is a “sprinkle” form that can be used in applesauce for easier administration.

Let your doctor know if your mood changes or if your migraines or seizures worsen while taking Divalproex. Also watch for signs of infection including fever, sore throat, cough or chills.

Divalproex can sometimes cause high ammonia levels. Symptoms of high ammonia levels can include a heartbeat that does not feel normal, abnormal breathing, confusion, pale skin, seizures, vomitting or sweating.
