* Plan F and Plan C are not available to Medicare beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. If you became eligible for Medicare before 2020,... you may still be able to enroll in Plan F or Plan C as long as they are available in your area.

1 Plans F and G offer high-deductible plans that each have an annual deductible of $2,870 in 2025. Once the annual deductible is met, the plan pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the year. The high-deductible Plan F is not available to new beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

2 Plan K has an out-of-pocket yearly limit of $7,220 in 2025. After you pay the out-of-pocket yearly limit and yearly Part B deductible, it pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.

3 Plan L has an out-of-pocket yearly limit of $3,610 in 2025. After you pay the out-of-pocket yearly limit and yearly Part B deductible, it pays 100% of covered services for the rest of the calendar year.

4 Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, except for a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 copayment for emergency room visits that don’t result in an inpatient admission.

Medicare Supplement Plan F covers all Medicare Supplement benefits

As you can see in the Medicare Supplement Insurance plans comparison chart above, Plan F checks every box. 36 percent of beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Supplement Insurance are enrolled in Plan F.2

The most popular Medigap plan, Plan G, accounts for 39 percent of Medicare Supplement enrollees. However, just because a plan is popular doesn’t mean it’s the right fit for your health care needs. Consult with a licensed insurance agent to determine which plan is right for you.

Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan F after 2020

Medigap Plan F is no longer available to newly eligible beneficiaries as of Jan. 1, 2020.

Due to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, Medicare Supplement Insurance plans are no longer allowed to cover the Medicare Part B deductible. Therefore, Medicare Supplement Plan F and Plan C (the only two plans that cover the Part B deductible) aren't available to new Medicare beneficiaries.

Those who enrolled in Plan F or Plan C before 2020 will be allowed to keep their coverage for as long as they wish. If you became eligible for Medicare prior to 2020 and decide you want Plan F or Plan C, you may be able to apply for either plan if they're available where you live.

Medicare Supplement Plan G covers a wide range of costs

As mentioned above, Medigap Plan G is the most popular plan among Medicare Supplement Insurance beneficiaries.

Plan G covers everything that Plan F does, with the exception of the Medicare Part B deductible, which is $257 per year in 2025.

Because the Medicare Part B deductible averages out to just over $21 per month in 2025, a Medicare Supplement Plan G option that is at least $22 lower in cost per month than a Plan F option could save you some money over the year, compared to enrolling in Plan F.

Medicare Supplement Plan N can offer premium value

Plan N offers similar coverage as Medicare Supplement Plan G, though it typically is offered at a lower monthly premium. In 2024, the average monthly premium for Plan N was $127, and the average Plan G premium was $155 per month.

Plan N doesn't cover Medicare Part B excess charges. You can avoid Medicare excess charges, however, by making sure you visit providers who accept Medicare assignment. The vast majority of physicians (98%) who accept Medicare patients also accept Medicare assignment.

Plan N requires a coinsurance payment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in an inpatient admission.

Given these minimal coinsurance requirements, Plan N can sometimes be a better value than Plan G if the difference in premiums is significant where you live.

Choosing the right Medigap plan for you

There is no definitive Medicare Supplement Insurance plan that is the “best.” The right plan for you is the one that is most closely aligned with your needs and budget.

The right plan for one person may be quite different than the right Medigap plan for someone else.
