Linezolid is a medication used to treat different types of infections. Linezolid is available as a brand name drug or generic and comes as an IV solution, an oral liquid and an oral tablet.

Linezolid is a medication used to treat infections such as pneumonia, skin infections and infections due to bacteria called Enterococcus faecium. It works by stopping the bacteria from replicating in the body, which stops the spread of infection and allows it to heal.

The brand name equivalent of Linezolid is called Zyvox. It is typically given twice daily for up to 3 weeks if needed.

Common side effects of Linezolid include headache, upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea.

While taking Linezolid, consuming some food and drinks (such as cheese or red wine) can cause sudden and severe high blood pressure. Make sure you talk to your doctor about this risk and know what food and drinks you should avoid.

Signs of high blood pressure include dizziness, headache, passing out or changes in eyesight.

Linezolid may increase the amount of acid in your blood. Contact your doctor if you experience abnormal heartbeat, rapid breathing, upset stomach, shortness of breath or muscle pain or cramps.

Linezolid can also lower some blood counts and raise your risk of infection. Signs of infection include fever, chills or sore throat.

Don’t take Linezolid for longer than you have been directed by your doctor, as this can lead to a second infection that involves severe diarrhea.
