Invokana Medicare Coverage

Invokana is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Canagliflozin. Invokana is taken once daily by mouth before the first meal of the day.

Invokana inhibits sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys to prevent absorption of blood sugar.

The major side effects of Invokana include increased potassium levels in the blood, urinary tract infections, yeast infections and kidney abnormalities.

Does Medicare cover Invokana?

According to GoodRx, Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Part D plans don’t typically cover Invokana 2023.¹

• Medicare Advantage plans or Part D plans that cover drugs include copay amounts that can range widely from one plan to another. Plan members may also be responsible for meeting a deductible before the plan’s drug coverage kicks in.

Invokana is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control.

In patients with established cardiac risk who are taking metformin, the addition of canagliflozin may be considered to reduce major cardiac events.

Invokana can lead to low blood sugar. Signs of low blood sugar include dizziness, headache, feeling sleepy or weak, shaking, a fast heartbeat, confusion, hunger or sweating. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these signs.

The incidence of kidney problems, broken bones and acidosis (too much acid in the blood) have occurred in patients taking Invokana. Stay hydrated to protect your kidneys and avoid dangerous activities that could increase the chance of injury.

Signs and symptoms of kidney problems include inability to pass urine, change in how much urine is passed, blood in the urine or noticeable weight gain.

Call your doctor if you have signs and symptoms of acidosis including confusion, fast breathing, fast heart rate, bad stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath or feeling tired or weak.
