Trulicity Medicare Coverage

Trulicity is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient Dulaglutide. It is injected into the upper arm, abdomen, or thigh once weekly to lower blood sugar in patients with high blood sugar due to type 2 diabetes.

Trulicity promotes glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors to help your pancreas release insulin and can slow digestion in your stomach. Common side effects of Trulicity include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, low blood sugar, stomach pain and loss of appetite.

Does Medicare cover Trulicity?

According to GoodRx, 99% of Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Part D plans covered Trulicity in 2023.¹

• Medicare Advantage plans or Part D plans that cover Trulicity include copay amounts that can range widely from one plan to another. Plan members may also be responsible for meeting a deductible before the plan’s drug coverage kicks in.
  
  
• Medicare Advantage plans that offer prescription drug coverage are called Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans (MA-PD). 89% of 2024 Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage.²
  
  
• Medicare prescription drugs plans each have their own formulary, or drug list, that details what prescription drugs are covered by the plan and how they are covered.

Trulicity is prescribed when diet and exercise have failed to control blood sugar levels and has an added benefit of weight loss.

Trulicity is provided as pre-filled syringes, and each syringe is to be used for one injection only. Ideally, Trulicity should be injected on the same day of each week, at roughly the same time of day.

Low blood sugar can happen while taking Trulicity with other diabetes medications.

Signs of low blood sugar include:

• Dizziness
• Headache
• Sleepiness
• Weakness
• Hunger
• Shaking
• Confusion
• Sweating

Talk to your doctor if you experience these symptoms.

Use of this medication should be closely monitored in patients with liver, kidney, stomach, or intestine abnormalities.

You should not use this medication if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2) because of an increased risk for thyroid tumors.

While many patients can safely use Trulicity, it is not currently recommended for women who are pregnant due to minimal information in these individuals. It is unknown if Trulicity is present in breast milk.
