  • Over 5 million people are enrolled in a Humana Medicare Advantage Plan2

Humana Medicare Part D plans, also called Medicare prescription drug plans, provide prescription drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries.

Humana prescription drug plans work with Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B), Medicare Supplement Insurance plans and may work with certain Medicare Advantage plans.

This article will detail Humana plan options and what factors may impact monthly costs.

What Are My Plan Options?

Humana offers three Medicare stand-alone prescription drug plans:3

  • Humana Walmart Value Rx Plan™ (PDP)
  • Humana Premier Rx Plan™ (PDP)
  • Humana Basic Rx Plan™ (PDP)

Your exact plan options and cost sharing may vary depending on your location.

Drug costs are organized into tiers. Each plan listed above charges different copayments or coinsurance when you fill a prescription within each tier. The tiers range from Tier 1, Preferred Generic, up to Tier 5, Specialty Tier. For example, if you get a generic prescription from Tier 1, your copay should be significantly lower than if you get a specialty prescription from Tier 5.

You may have to pay a separate copayment or coinsurance for each prescription you fill. So if you take a significant amount of prescriptions, your out-of-pocket costs may be higher.

How Much Will I Pay Each Month?

If you are enrolled in a Humana Medicare stand-alone prescription drug plan, your monthly costs will vary depending on which plan you are enrolled in, when you enrolled in coverage, which prescription drugs you take and which pharmacy you use.

Your Plan Premium

Your plan premium will vary depending on the plan you choose. The three Humana Medicare prescription drug plans listed above have different monthly premiums.

Your Enrollment

Your monthly premium may be higher if you waited to get Medicare prescription drug coverage.

You may have to pay a late enrollment penalty if you waited 63 days or more after your Initial Enrollment Period to get prescription drug coverage and did not have other creditable drug coverage.

If you have to pay the late enrollment penalty, it will be added to your monthly plan premium. The exact amount will vary depending on how long you waited to get coverage.

Your Pharmacy

The pharmacy you use may impact your Medicare prescription drug plan costs.

Depending on the plan you choose, your prescriptions may be less expensive if you fill them at certain pharmacies.

For example, if you are enrolled in the Humana Walmart Value Rx Plan™ (PDP) and fill your prescriptions at a preferred cost-sharing retail pharmacy such as Walmart, Walmart Neighborhood Market or Sam’s Club pharmacies, your copayments may be cheaper than if you filled your prescription at another pharmacy.
